The psychological benefits of combining sport with studies

RECONCILIATION OF STUDIES AND SPORT

by Oriol Mercade, a sport psychologist at BTA

STUDENT

On many occasions what comes to mind is the belief that in order to achieve a better academic performance a lot of hours must be put in, believing that the greater time spent, the better results we will get.

This belief is disproved thanks to the studies carried out comparing students who practice sports and who don't practice them. The results obtained show a positive relationship between the practice of physical activity and academic performance.

 ATHLETE

Understanding sport as a way to stay fit and active is a very simple vision, given how extensively it contributes to the person who performs it. Specifically, the athletes of BTA, because of their weekly session of mental training, obtain many other benefits through sports practice, such as better brain function, higher levels of concentration, increased self-esteem and improved habits that influence learning process. All these benefits that they receive from the practice of tennis can be observed in the short term and in the long term.

RECONCILIATION

The reconciliation of both disciplines (sport/studies) calls for great effort and dedication, since the demands continue to increase in both areas as the years go by. Although you might think that putting one of the two aside would increase the performance in the other it has been observed that it is not.

This should be taken into account by the athletes themselves and by their parents at the time of making a decision regarding giving up sport for academic reasons and lack of time.
